2018 marks the twentieth anniversary of AMX Racing in Phillips County at the Dodson Fairgrounds.
This year's Phillips County Fair AMX Racing event is scheduled on Saturday, August 4, at 12 p.m., before the Bash for Cash event, which will be held later that day. Prices for this Grandstand event is $10 per adult and $5 per child.
The event consists of opening heat races, main races, Pitman races and Powderpuff races, all on the dirt track in the Grandstand Arena.
"The heat races are eight laps and the main races are ten laps," Frank Kindle, the event's coordinator told the PCN.
Kindle explained what the crowd will see when they attend an AMX race, often referred to as the Bump and Run.
"You will see some bumping and rubbing," Kindle said. "You will see a couple of spinouts. You might see some people roll. We hope we don't roll but there's always a rollover."
Any racer can win at any given race, and winning isn't as simple as it seems.
"There are so many variables, I mean the track is a big part of it," Kindle said. "If it is right up right, you are going to hook up and a lot of it has to do with the driver's ability and it doesn't hurt to have horse-power here and there."
Last year's event featured 23 drivers, but there will be extra incentive at the event if the event can bring a few more cars this year.
"The fair board has agreed that if we get 30 cars, our payout gets to be $5,000," Kindle said. "The current prize is a $4,000 pot."
Though many of the racers are from the Phillips County area and around the Hi-Line, there are drivers from outside of the local area.
"There are a couple from Lewistown, we have two guys from Great Falls, and we just acquired a guy last year from Grass Range who is talking about bringing up three of his buddies who are also from Grass Range," Kindle said.
After the opening heat races, drivers are put into the A Main and B Main races. There is a stock class and super stock class. The amount for final races per class isn't limited to two final races.
"It just depends on how many drivers we have," Kindle said. "Last year we had a C Main for stock. We had 15 stock cars last year."
The Powderpuff and Pitman races are held at the end of the event.
"In the Powederpuff race, a lot of the racers either have their daughters or their girlfriends or wives race and the Pitman races are their best buddies who have worked on the car and you just give them the liberty of driving if it's still running," Kindle said.
