Malta at District Music Festival

Ninety-plus students from Malta High School’s Band and Choir participated in the 2018 District 12 Music Festival in Poplar last weekend.

The event gave all musicians the chance to qualify for the 2018 State Music Festival that is scheduled to be held at Skyview High School in Billings on Friday, May 4 through Saturday, May 5. Fifty-seven Malta Band and Choir members are headed to the state event.

Malta held their Pre-Festival concert on Wednesday, April 11.

“It’s the first time these performers have played their pieces in public,” said Malta Band Director Erik Engebretson, mentioning that the event would be mostly for the newest performers.

The event hosted parents, teachers and members of the community.

The choir and band each returned many state performers from last year.

“Almost everybody who sang something last year,” Malta Choir Director Larry Swingen said. “We have a few newbies but we are always happy that they spent time preparing their numbers.”

The big choir performed Hold Me, Rock Me and Carrickfergus at the meet in Poplar and both were selected for State this year. Along with the other acts, Mr. Swingen was pleased with the efforts of his students.

“These kids worked very hard to be well prepared for their performances at this Festival,” Swingen said. “I'm very proud of their efforts and achievements.”
