Parks and Rec: Dance Class

Ballet, Tap and Hip-Hop classes started for kids 3 & up

Malta Parks and Recreation department started it's second season of dance classes last Tuesday, February 27.

The class, in it's second session and first of 2018, features ballet, tap and hip-hop classes taught by Sheena Dorak.

"Things are going pretty well," said Dorak. "Everybody is trying their best and it's just a matter of learning what their speed is before I can start progressing with them."

Dorak, is a life-long dancer, who brings her many years of studying and performing dance to Malta.

"I began dance when I was three," Dorak said. "I continued dancing for a studio in Illinois until I graduated from high school. Then I went on and took a few classes in college and then also competed on a dance team in college for a little while."

She explained her reasoning for offering the three genres of dance that make up her classes.

"I always try to do ballet because that's the foundation for all dances," Dorak said. "Last session I also did a jazz/hip-hop class and so this year I wanted to offer tap and hip-hop, since I knew that hip-hop was really popular. Tap is a lot of fun, so I just thought I would branch out a little bit."

On the first day of classes, the Parks and Recreation department had 29 children three years and up signed up for classes.

The classes will continue until Friday, April 6, the day of the Dance Performance, which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

The youngest class is the age 3-4 ballet class, which is held on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. through 5 p.m. Ballet and tap classes are offered for children aged five and up on Thursdays at 4 p.m. through 5 p.m. Hip-Hop classes are offered for children ages seven and up and are held on Thursdays from 5 p.m. through 5:30 p.m. Each class is 30-minutes per group.

The classes are $40 each, and class sizes are limited, but kids can join anytime until classes are full.
