Tall weather stories still being torn down

As an all-time editor printer used to insert in his news columns almost weekly: "news is all fired scarce this week."

The weather was probably the week's big news story locally. The coldest day of the week was Monday when the U.S. reclamation thermometer registered 42 below zero, colder by 2° in the previous weeks low.

Snow measures about 16 inches on the level and farmers and ranchers are hoping for weather warm enough to settle it before high winds drift in, making roads worse than they are at present.

Schools opened Wednesday when weather moderated to the comparative warmth of 14 below zero in the morning and warmed up to zero by noon.

World mail carriers probably suffered the most discomfort during the cold spell. Rex Ulrich, who delivers in Regina, had difficulty getting through drifted roads and carriers to Box Elder and other communities abandoned their cars and used saddle-horses to complete their rounds. George Soennichsen, driving the Loring- Morgan-Whitewater route, spent a day digging his pickup out of the borrow pit after he had driven off the grade. He said the ditches were level full with the grade.

Car of steel derailed

A freight car loaded with steel went off the track between Wagner and Exeter Monday, delaying train service for several hours. A broken wheel was said to be the cause of the accident. No one was injured.

O'Rourke, Lovejoy Ranches sold to Simonson, Murdock

A business transaction involving in excess of 20,000 acres of land was completed recently when the ranches owned by L.W. "Larry" O'Rourke and Ernie "Cy" Lovejoy were sold to Roger Simonson and William Murdock of Whitewater.

The ranches adjoined each other and are located about 35 miles northwest of Malta.

The Lovejoy Ranch was homesteaded in 1910 by William Lovejoy, father of Cy, who bought the place from his father about 1922 and had lived there since that time. The Lovejoy home was built in 1910.

Street Talk

Question: "What do you think of President Bush's providing tax rebates of up to $150 billion (as much as $800 per individual taxpayer) to help avoid a possible recession?"

Dale McAuley: I think it is a good idea, but $800 is a little much.

Russell Jaynes: It won't stop a recession.

Darrell Gairrett: I could use it. The more (money) the merrier I am!

Jerry Salveson: I think my ship has come in.
