Lady Mavs defeat Bearcubs, Lions

Six Saco seniors honored on Senior Night

The North Country Lady Mavericks are 9-2 after picking up a pair of 3-C wins last weekend.

“We put together a pretty decent weekend of games,” North Country Head Coach Amber Erickson said. “We hadn’t seen (Frazer or Lustre) yet so it was nice to finally get a game against them.”

On Saturday, January 13, the Lady Mavericks defeated the Frazer Bearcubs 72-47.

The team was led by senior Mickayla Johnson, who had 23 points, nine rebounds and six blocks.

“She is doing a really good job posting up strong this year,” Coach Erickson said. “She is confident out there, she wants the ball and she has been finishing to the basket better every game.”

Freshman Kia Wasson had 14 points and four steals, while also going 7-of-10 from the field. Senior Jada Sudbrack had 11 points and nine assists. Freshman Kaitlyn McColly had 10 points, seven assists, six steals and six rebounds.

“We had four in double-figures so that was good to see,” Coach Erickson said. “It’s always good to see.”

The team had 18 assists and turned the ball over nine times that night.

“That’s a great number to me,” Coach Erickson said. “Anytime you can get in single digits in turnovers, that’s good.”

In the team’s 53-36 win over Lustre Christian, North Country was led by Johnson, who had 16 points and six rebounds. Johnson made 3-of-4 free throws. McColly had 12 points and four steals. Sudbrack had nine points, twelve rebounds and four assists. Sydney Zeller had six points. Bailey Funk had a team-leading five assists.

The Mavericks would go on to face Frazer in Saco for Saco High School’s Senior night, where Sudbrack, Zeller, Funk, Christ DePuydt, Chandler Pippin and Challise Young were each honored with their families.

The Lady Mavs held opponents under 10 points for five-of-eight quarters played last weekend.

“That’s kind of been our focus here these last couple of weeks,” Coach Erickson said. “Just picking up our effort on the defensive end, playing solid man-to-man and making them earn every bucket. The kids are finding out that when we do that it creates a lot of offense for them as well because you get a lot of steals and a lot of turnovers and then you’re able to go back the other way.”

Coach Erickson went on to say that she was proud of how the team’s bench is showing growth.

“Our depth is really developing,” Coach Erickson said. “This weekend I had ten kids in and out of the games.”
