Coyotes pick up more wins!

Dodson is ranked third in 3C after defeating Lustre, Frazer

The Dodson Coyotes picked up a pair of wins this past weekend over Frazer and Lustre, putting them in third place in 3C basketball.

"These wins were big but we have got a long season ahead," Coyotes Head Coach Frank Benson told the PCN. "They were good wins but we are just halfway done with our conference schedule."

On Friday, January 12, Dodson picked up a 52-49 win over the Frazer Bearcubs.

The team was led by Shaun Ball, who scored 14 points. Tyrese Messerly added 13 to the total and David Jaynes had thirteen points. Caleb Ditmar had six points. Corbin LoneBear and Zerek Jones both had four points.

"David Jaynes hit two three pointers in the fourth quarter. That was big," Coach Benson said. "Then they held on."

During their win, Coach Benson noticed that things were working well when they moved the ball in their set offense, not relying so much on isolation.

"They didn't play one-on-one basketball," Coach Benson said. "They were playing as a team."

It is a trend that Coach Benson hopes to see continue throughout the remainder of the season.

"We have got to get out of this one-on-one and isolation mentality because when it's one against the world, it won't work," Coach Benson said. "You have to run the offense, move the ball around, limit dribbling and if we can fix that, we will be able to put together four quarters."

Dodson defeated Lustre Christian 46-34 on Saturday, January 13, thanks to a 20-7 run in the second quarter.

Jaynes led Dodson with 12 points. Messerly, Ball and LoneBear each had nine points. Ditmar added five points and Jeramiah Benson had two points.

Dodson's defense held the Lions to 15 points throughout the first three quarters, while scoring 40 points throughout that span.

Dodson was up 40-15 by the end of the third quarter. Lustre scored four in the first quarter, seven in the second and four in the third quarter. Dodson scored eight in the first, 20 in the second and 12 in the third. Ball hit a backcourt trey at the buzzer in the third period.

"I don't know if I have ever seen them as good as they did in those first three quarters," Coach Benson said. "Time of possession was a big key in the game. We controlled the game defensively and offensively."

The team gave up 19 points in the fourth but was able to hold on for the win.

"We were patient on offense and getting a lot of lay ups," Coach Benson said.

Dodson is scheduled to face Scobey in Dodson on Friday, January 19.
