Fundraiser started for Evans family

A fund has been set up for Gregory and Rebecca Evans, who tragically lost their house located at 525 South 7th Avenue West to fire on Wednesday, December 20, 2017.

The fund, named the Evans Fire Fund was set up at First Security Bank a few days after the event.

The couple has been living with their daughter Marie Alexander.

"If it wasn't for them, we would be on the street right now," Gregory Evans said.

The fund will be used to help the family secure funds to replace their home of over 20 years, where they raised three children that attended Malta Public Schools.

"It was about 6 or 7 p.m.," Evans said. "I just got home. I was out with my daughter (Marie) getting stuff ready for Christmas."

Evans had relaxed after starting the wood-stove and woke up to "Fire falling from the ceiling."

"I still can't believe it," Evans said.

There was no one other than Evans in the house, but tragically, one family cat perished in the flames.

"I slipped and hit my back on the porch," Evans said of his escape.

The couple has been on disability for years. Gregory was involved in an accident involving an underage drunk driver in 1990, an event that cost him the ability to work. Soon after, Rebecca would lose her ability to work, injuring herself while taking care of Gregory.

Their son Greg has been working to remove the rubble.

The couple did not have homeowners insurance.
