One Nation, Under God
Once again the Malta Dirt Daubers Garden Club invited Merchants who have the Whiskey Barrel Flower Planter to participate in a Barrel Christmas Decorating Contest.
There was no entry form to fill out and all barrels are eligible to win, entrants simply had to decorate the barrel with the following criteria in mind.
1. Originality - a design appealing and fresh.
2. Design - an overall design appealing from the street.
3. Theme - that follows a Christmas theme.
4. Creativity - that's superior to the other decorated barrels.
For the past several weeks, businesses have been busily decorating their barrel for the annual contest.
This year 30 barrels were decorated. A panel of judges reviewed all the barrels and had notified the winners and they were announced here in the Phillips County News and on the KMMR Radio by December 18th.
The judges examined each and every one and choosing the top awards was very difficult. They finally based the decision on unique originality in design and creativity. You didn't make it easy on them since several were in the running. The decision of the judges is final.
First place and a $50 gift certificate for gas from Westside Self Service went to Wipfli and the IRS Grinch plucking a string of Christmas lights from a tree.
Second place and a $40 gift certificate from Valley Drug went to the Central Avenue Pit Crew and the Motorcycle Grinch with his wheels burning rubber.
Third place and a $30 gift certificate from the Malta Dairy Queen went to the Phillips County Courthouse and their Ice Fishing Penguins.
There were two Honorable Mention chosen this year and they were: Coffee Corner with the Santa and Elves, and the Lucky Bullet with Snowmen.
The barrels and contest are sponsored by the Malta Dirt Daubers Garden Club. If you wish to participate next year contact Jane Ereaux 654-1866 or Toni Ziegler 654-1187.
Let these businesses know you noticed their festive barrels and take a look around at all the other contenders. Merry Christmas!
