One Nation, Under God
October 23-31, 2017, marked the twenty-ninth National Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a National Drug Prevention Campaign celebrated every year during the last full week in October as a way to promote awareness of the dangers of illegal drugs and drug abuse. It also commemorates the memory of DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died in the line of duty while fighting the battle against drug trafficking. People began wearing red ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America.
Malta High School reACT! Members celebrated at each of the Malta Public Schools with fun educational drug-free activities. FCCLA and reACT! teamed up this year to have Daily Themes to Dress Up for Red Ribbon Week at the middle school and high school and the elementary school held their own dress up days.
On Monday, October 23rd, MHS FCCLA and reACT! met with Officer Peigneux and elementary counselor, Fallon Handley to hand out Red Ribbon Gel bands at the elementary school. Members talked about all the other fun activities there were to do instead of drugs.
reACT! members held a “Color Me Drug Free” coloring contest all week for grades K-5. Prizes were awarded for first, second and third in each of the grade levels on Friday. Red Ribbon Week Trivia was held in the Malta Middle School with candy awarded to classes answering the questions correctly. Dress Up for Red Ribbon Week was held in all three schools this year with candy prizes. Malta High School students had fun playing Red Ribbon Week Family Feud in Class Competitions. The Juniors came out victorious, winning a Pizza Party for their entire class.
