Malta School Board Recap

Principal updates and more at October meeting

The Malta School Board held their monthly meeting last Wednesday, October 11, at Malta High School.

The board approved a couple of things that included adding a paraprofessional, substitute teacher and middle school girls’ basketball coach.

The board also approved Close Up’s out of state trip to Washington D.C. slated for April 14-16.

The school board discussed the possibility of looking into a third party web designer in order to make the school’s website ADA compliant.

The school added Kelli Christofferson to the roster of substitute teachers.

Elementary Report

Malta Elementary School Principal Tad Schye reported that the enrollment number for Malta Elementary School was 231 for the month of September. There was a delay in the installation of playground equipment, due to the original company being sold, however, the project was finished.

Schye plans to schedule future Little M-ette events for Friday night games because last Tuesday’s event during the Malta M-ette Volleyball Varsity game on Tuesday, October 10, went late during a school night.

Schye brought attention to room 113, a classroom in which the lighting is too bright.

Schye mentioned that Malta Elementary would be looking into MobyMax, a personalized learning program.

Malta Middle School Report

Malta Middle School Principal Shawn Bleth reported that the enrollment for Malta Middle School in the month of September was 113.

He shared that the school was in the middle of their spirit week. He also announced that football and volleyball seasons were close to wrapping up.

Malta Middle school girls basketball practice started on Monday, October 16. Kaitlyn Smith was approved by the board to coach the Malta Middle School girls’ basketball team this season.

The school announced that they are continuing to use paperless midterm reports and that roughly seventy-eight percent of the school’s parents have accounts made for the midterm reports.

Bleth announced that construction of the new shed at Murray Field had been completed along with the re-siding of the existing shed structure.

Having the new shed allows middle school sports teams to store gear in the structure rather than store the gear in the school building.

Malta High School

Malta High School Principal Scott King reported the enrollment for Malta High School started at 138 for the 2017-18 school year and is currently at 134.

King announced that Monday, November 6 through Friday, November 10, is 2017 College Application Week, a time in which fees are waived for students to apply to colleges in the state of Montana.

The FFA planned to attend the 2017 Nile event in Billings from Sunday, October 15 through Monday, October 16.

He mentioned that the MHS Fall Play is scheduled as planned. The play will be performed on Monday, October 23, at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, October 24 at 7 p.m. alongside the Culinary Arts dinner that takes place at 5:30 p.m. (Tuesday Only).

The Malta High School Speech and Drama meet is scheduled for December 9.

King explained that schools were in minor talks to discuss the possibility of starting Speech and Drama season in the first weeks of school rather than in mid-fall. Practices for Speech and Drama started on Monday, October 2.

Becky Bruce, a Malta High School teacher and FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leader of America) coordinator, presented the board with a project that FCCLA members will start possibly this spring called "Farm-to-School." It is a program in which FCCLA would use the west garden to grow fresh fruits and vegetable that could possibly be used for school lunches.

Bus driving training was set to take place last Saturday, October 14.

The school board’s next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 8, at 7 p.m.
