Team survives fifth set in Chinook, win three-of-five in Roundup
The Malta M-ettes volleyball team is now 4-2 on the season thanks to a five set victory over the Chinook Sugarbeeters on Tuesday, September 19.
The team then went to Roundup for an Invitational Tournament in which they won three-of-five games played on Saturday, September 23.
In the team’s win over Chinook, the team was led by senior Ella Schye who had 21 kills and four blocks. The scores in that game was 25-14, 19-25, 19-25, 25-16 and 15-8.
Janessa Malmend had a double-double consisting of 11 kills and 18 digs. Kyleigh Schipman had 17 assists and Sam Mitchell had three aces.
Though Malta jumped ahead early, winning the first set, Chinook came back with a vengeance winning the next two. The coaches had to get the team to refocus.
“Once a point is done, it is done but after those sets we were just trying to redirect them to fight back and they did,” Coach Hines said.
The coaches’ talk worked as the team was able to close out the game.
In the Roundup Tournament, Malta had to battle illness as a third of the team was sick, according to Coach Hines.
“I’m not talking just a little cold,” she said. “I’m talking sicker than a dog. We did expect a little bit of a struggle but there is something to be said of them playing so well and not feeling good.”
Malta kicked things off by defeating St. Labre in pool play. The scores were 20-16 and 20-16.
Malta would go on to defeat Belfry 20-8 and 20-5 and lose to Roundup 20-15 and 20-9 in pool play.
The team was setup to play Bridger in the tournament but lost 25-13 and 25-16. They would end their outing with a win over Shepherd, those scores being 25-18, 9-25 and 15-7.
