Kenneth Walters

Kenneth Walters, 78, of Hallock, Minnesota passed away at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota on Friday, July 7, 2017. Kenneth Earl Walters was born July 19, 1938 in Hallock to Alfred and Frances (Gamble) Walters. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John’s Episcopal Church. Kenneth worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at Lake Bronson State Park. He graduated from Hallock High School in 1957 and enlisted in the U.S. Army that same year. Kenneth completed his military duty and was honorably discharged on May 27, 1960. He returned home and worked in construction until May of 1962 when he started with Republic Steel Corporation. Kenneth was a fireman, oiler and water tender seaman on iron ore boats sailing the Great Lakes. He left Republic Steel in November of 1973. Kenneth returned to Hallock and managed the Eagles Club until he began working for Lystad’s as an exterminator. He moved to North Platte, Nebraska while with Lystad’s and suffered a disabling accident in September of 1977. After recovery and rehabilitation Kenny lived in both Hallock and Malta, Montana. He bought a trailer on Lake of the Woods and enjoyed 27 summers there. He would spend his winters in Malta. He was a member of the American Legion and Hallock Eagles Club.

He is survived by nieces, Diane (Mark) Smith, Sebastian, FL; Pat Christenson, Chicago, IL; Nancy (Jim) Kelly Vero Beach, FL; Teresa (Roy) Jones, Hinsdale, MT; Sue Cederholm, Fargo, ND; Deb Cederholm, Fargo; Joni (Rick) Turner, Bemidji, MN; and nephew, Michael Simanton, Casper, WY. Special family members, Amy and Randy Burkel, Grand Forks; Brittany (Daniel) Hoggatt, Sebastian, FL; Damon, Tony and Jessica, Grand Forks. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Patricia, June and Kaye and their spouses; a brother, Leslie and a nephew. Robert Christenson.

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in First Presbyterian Church at Hallock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service. Rev. Marge Landwehr, presiding; Lyndon Johnson, soloist; Diane Younggren, organist. Honorary casket bearers will be family and friends. Military honors will be accorded by the Hallock American Legion. Austin Funeral Chapel, Hallock.
