Innovation key to future of our ag economy

Big changes are occurring in the fields and prairies of Montana. For the first time since 2003, the state’s ranchers may be delivering their beef across the Pacific to China and the new agriculture secretary is taking the reins. With one eye on how these developments could enhance our future, we also can’t lose sight of what has got us to this point and is needed to sustain a strong agricultural economy today and in the future.

Even the most experienced farmers struggle to anticipate the next challenge and need to have the best tools at their disposal to adapt to an ever-changing landscape. This holds true in the fields, the prairies, in business and in tackling the unpredictable political headwinds from Washington, D.C. To do this, Montana agriculturists are depending on innovative methods and technologies to better predict and address potential challenges.

Ag companies that are focused on innovation will help provide agriculturists with 21st century solutions to pressing agricultural challenges exacerbated by population growth—which increases world food demand—and the daily and seasonal challenges of the ag-economy.

It’s not always easy making a living off the land but our work is essential to Montana’s number one economic driver. As our political environment continues to change, it is increasingly important that both policy makers and industry leaders embrace the innovation that comes from collaboration and support of the development of new technologies through investments in research & development. This will help the producer and the consumer.
