100 years ago

July 5, 1917

The past week has been a record breaker as far as car accidents were concerned with a total of five accidents taking place. One group of Canadians in a Ford car went into the ditch when traveling "at least 35 miles an hour." It may be that those good old days have returned with the new state speed limit of 40 miles an hour.

"The Sunset Princess," a movie produced in Malta and the Little Rockies by the Great Western Film Company, featuring Wallace Coburn, was scheduled to be shown at the Orpheum Theatre on July 4.

A total of 146 cars followed the fire truck to the stockyards where a small fire was put out.

Rain was badly needed in every section of Phillips County and the danger of not having crops mature was growing greater daily.

The trains were having trouble too. The fast mail was derailed at Saco, holding up the train for five hours. A bridge west of Malta burned, causing the evening train to be many hours late, and holding up the circus performance scheduled by the Yankee Robinson Company.

July 2, 1942

Rainfall for June in Phillips County total 6.43 inches

A rainfall of 1.18 inches Sunday brought the June total for Phillips County to 6.43 inches following a month of rains heavier than they have been for many years.

The largest supply of irrigation water in the history of the Milk River irrigation system is now available for farmers in Phillips, Blaine and Valley counties.

60 tons scrap rubber collected here

Claiming the state per capita record for the collecting of scrap rubber is the town of Landusky which has salvaged a total of 8,230 pounds of approximately 130 pounds for every man, woman and child in the town. The total to date in Phillips County amounts to 60 tons.

Drive being conducted to collect old silk hose

A drive has been instigated to collect large quantities of old silk. Lisle and nylon hose to be shipped to China for use as bandages. Need for bandage materials in China is so great that for the past few weeks the Chinese have been using a poor grade for the purpose.

July 6, 1967

Swim lessons have started, pool repaired

Swimming lessons were begun at the Municipal Pool on Wednesday and there are 108 youngsters taking part in the lessons, with three beginner's courses and one intermediate course offered.

Also, parts for the pump arrived Saturday and were installed. The pool is now clean and the water is heated, Rick Long, pool manager, says.

Juveniles destroy Saco outhouse

County Attorney Don Cole reported to the News that juveniles had been involved in the destruction of property in Saco recently. Five teenage boys were involved when they smashed an outhouse at the roping club arena and tipped another over. The youth have made restitutions for the destroyed property and authorities are investigating the possibility of beer drinking being involved.

July 8, 1992

County takes over dispatch

The Phillips County Sheriff's Office now has control of the dispatch office as a result of an inter-local agreement with the City of Malta.

The action completed a changeover in which the City of Malta now contracts with the county for law enforcement and dispatch services. When the city opted to close down its own police department a couple of years ago and contract with the county, the dispatch center was not involved in the move.

Lopez named Talent Show Winner

Jessica Lopez was the winner of the July 4th Talent Show in Zortman. She did a dance routine. Jessica is the daughter of Jose and Christina Lopez. Second place went to Miranda Crasco, daughter of Darrell and Vi Crasco, Vince "Spanky" Mace took third place. He is the son of Eunice Crowder of Malta. Thelma Crasco organized the talent show.
