Swift Fox surveys continue in Phillips, Blaine and Valley Counties

Since early fall of 2016, Clemson University and collaborators have been in northeast Montana investigating the behavioral ecology and the population dynamics of the swift fox. Currently, it is pup-rearing season and we are performing surveys to estimate the litter size of foxes in this area.

On average, swift foxes give birth to three-to-four kits beginning in mid-May and both the female and male provide parental care. If you have seen or know of any active dens in northern Blaine, Phillips, or Valley counties please contact Jessica Swift at (571) 288-6633, your help is greatly appreciated.

Along with monitoring active dens this summer, Clemson has begun conducting red fox and coyote population surveys in the area. We'd like to thank all of the landowners who have been so welcoming and kind enough to allow the University to access their land to conduct these surveys. Clemson was able to radio-collar and ear tag 20 swift foxes last fall and they look forward to another great trapping season this year. Found a radio-collar or unmarked swift fox or just have questions about the project? Feel free to call Jessica at the number above.
