Gov. Ford arranges deal permitting Jap field help here
Consents to adoption of plan assuring their removal when labor is done
Relief for hard pressed Montana sugar beet growers unable to secure thinning help appeared to be in sight this week as state and county governments, farmers and sugar companies hastened to swing into action with a workable plan to import Japanese evacuees for the thinning season and return them to their detention camps afterwards.
In the case of Phillips County the commissioners, sugar company and state authorities last Saturday completed a mutual agreement under which the county undertakes to provide the incoming Japanese with ordinary protection due a United States citizen and without hiring special guards. Each worker coming in has been guaranteed return transportation to his base camp and while here is under the authority of the farmer who uses them the place. Sheriff Campbell is deputizing growers who receive the labor and they will be held responsible subject to supervision by the sheriff's normal staff.

Phillips County dragsters prepare for first race of the season
A Christmas tree will be the center of attention in Malta this Sunday as the Phillips County Motor Sports Association hosts its first drag races at the newly constructed strip located at the old airport.
But in this case, the Christmas tree is the elaborate set of lights used to prepare a driver for, and to signal, the start of a race.
Depending on mostly contributions of money, material and in-kind donations, the track is only a work in progress. Temporary bleachers will be in place for this race although the group hopes to have permanent bleachers seating 1,200 by September.
"Since this is only our first race, we will be happy if 40 cars show up," said association member John Carnahan.
