Golfers at state meet

The season has ended for Phillips County golf teams as Malta and Saco both had golfers in their respective State Meets last week.

Sophomore Kloie Marks was Malta’s lone golfer at the 2017 State Golf Meet in Shelby. It was her first trip to state as an individual having golfed in the 2016 meet with her team. Though she posted a score of 65 through the first nine holes and 76 in the second nine, her meet was cut short due to inclement weather which caused the meet to be delayed an entire day. She did not finish her second day.

“The front nine in Shelby are hard,” Malta Head Coach Sean Estill said. “Halfway through the back nine the weather started turning ugly. Given the conditions, she did well.”

Upon hearing that the meet was delayed, Marks decided to focus on her academics.

“She was worried about getting back to school,” Coach Estill said. “She had been gone for three days and she really didn’t want to add a fourth day, especially when tests were about to be reviewed.”

Saco was represented by three golfers at the State C Meet in Seeley Lake.

Senior Christian Menge was the only boy golfer amongst the two schools and he scored a cumulative total of 247; 129 in the first eighteen and 118 in the second game.

Saco senior Jamison Schaaf was the lone returning individual golfer, posting a total of 283 over the two days; 149 in the first 18 holes and 134 in the second 18.

Saco junior Jada Sudbrack posted a total score of 260; 133 in the first 18 and 127 in the second 18.

“Both Jami and Christian shaved over ten strokes from the first day to the second day,” Saco Head Coach Elena Sudbrack said in a release. “Jada maintained a consistent score each day. The weather was cool with some rain and their first on the 18 hole course presented its challenges. They managed to continue through both days improving their scores and gaining State experience. It was a great way to end the season.”
