Funk wins two events, Cummings and Jaynes makes state
The Women’s Eastern C Divisional took place last Thursday and three Phillips County Track teams placed athletes that will go on to State this weekend.
Westby-Grenora (Mon-Dak) took first at the meet with 136 points. Scobey was second with 93 and Savage was third with 36.5. Saco took seventh with 33 points and nearly got stuck in a three way tie with Richey-Lambert and Frazer who each had 34 points. Whitewater was fourteenth with eight points and Dodson was fifteenth with four points.
Saco junior Bailey Funk won two events; the pole vault in which she cleared 8-6 and the triple jump in which she left a mark at 32-2 ¾. Funk became a divisional champion for the first time in her high school track career.
“It feels pretty good,” Funk said.
Funk placed tenth in pole vault in last year’s state event. She also qualified in long jump after taking third at the Eastern C with a mark at 15-1 ¾, a new personal best.
Funk plans on working hard this week to prepare for state but she doesn’t want to psych herself out this weekend.
“A lot of vault practice,” she said when asked about preparing. “Jump long and vault high. I can’t think about it I gotta run and jump.”
Whitewater’s Kayleigh Cummings qualified for state in shot put by taking second with a new personal best of 33-10. She and Coach Charlene Wasson hope to train this week, focusing on her core strength.
“She is going to be doing some resistance band training,” Coach Wasson said. “She is going to try to get some more power throw the arm that she has to swing through.”
Cummings also took eighth in javelin with a throw of 95-11.
“She really wanted to break 100 this year,” Coach Wasson said. “Our division is pretty tough in javelin and you gotta throw 100 to make it out of divisionals.”
Saco’s Sydney Zeller took fourth in long jump with a new personal best of 15-1 ¾. She also qualified in high jump by clearing 4-8 and taking fourth.
Dodson freshman Christina Jaynes took fifth in discus and shot with marks of 89-0 and 31-10 ¾ respectively.
“If she keeps working hard, I think she should be able to go to state every year from now,” Dodson Head Coach Tianna Bloomer said. “She has the potential to be a state contender for the next three years. It’s pretty impressive for a freshman female to succeed so quickly.”
Whitewater sophomore Bella Lawless posted two personal best in the 400 and 800 but was unable to place in the events. Her times were 1:15.75 in the 400 and 2:59.32 in the 800.
Whitewater senior Serena Sanguins posted a throw of 23-3 in shot put and a throw of 68-9 in discus.
Saco junior Challise Young posted a throw of 60-9 in discus and a throw of 21-10.25.
