Dodson School honors Kielb

Of the nearly 90 awards passed out at the Dodson Junior High and High School Awards night last Tuesday in Dodson, the eldest person honored was the long-time voice of Phillips County, KMMR owner Greg Kielb.

Prior to the regular program, Dodson School’s Supt. Gary Weitz announced the special presentation and asked Kielb – joined by his wife, Cluade— to join him and Dodson High School’s Wendy Hopkins to the front of the gym where Hopkins awarded Kielb with a yellow, green and white star quilt sewn by Melissa Henry.

“Through Greg’s many years of service at KMMR, he has been a strong supporter and the station has been a strong supporter of Dodson academics, athletics and in general daily happenings here at the school,” Supt. Weitz said. “Greg, the students and people in the audience here have enjoyed many things from you, especially your interviews with coaches in the Coaches’ Corner.”

Supt. Weitz asked the Dodson Junior and High School students down on the gym floor to honor him with the star quilt.

Kielb, who playfully said his acceptance speech would “only be 30-minutes,” thanked Dodson for the honor and said he was recently shifting through old Class C basketball programs and recalled a time when the Lady Coyotes were on their way to the state tournament.

“There were some Houlds, some Andersons …Kienenbergers,” Kielb said. “It was easy to do play-by-play in those years because there was times when it was just Kienenberger, back to Kienenberger, back to Kienenberger … they had five on the floor at one time.”

Following Kielb’s speech, each of the Dodson students shook his hand before heading back to their seats.

“Thank you very much,” he concluded.
