One Nation, Under God

Give the kid a chance

Man is it tough to be a Bears fan.

For those that missed it, in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Bears originally had the third pick of the draft.

With so much talent of defense and our lack of forced turnovers last season, I and many other Bears fans expected our GM to draft the draft’s top safety or cornerback.

While watching the draft, I waited patiently expecting the 49ers to draft Stanford’s Solomon Thomas with the second overall pick. Then it happened.

The Bears traded from the third spot to the second. That was the first red flag. If you trade up anywhere in the draft, that means you’ve given up something in return for the spot. In this case, the Bears gave up three additional draft picks to move up one spot.

I set my cell phone to record the television broadcast just to see my reaction to the pick. Again… I was thinking the Bears would take the next best defender.

To my surprise and to the dismay of many around the country, they selected Mitchell Trubisky, a quarterback from the University of North Carolina.

It shocked me to my core. Mainly because of the draft picks that Chicago had lost.

After letting the news marinate for a few days, I’ve come to the conclusion that whether I like it or not, it happened. And being that Bears GM Ryan Pace put his job on the line to give up so much to get Trubisky; I believe he was a good pickup.

I watched some game footage and I see a guy with a great arm and a pretty good feel for the game of football.

Year after year our franchise has failed at the quarterback position. As much as I liked having Jay Cutler there was no denying that he lost many games with poor decisions.

Picking up Trubisky in this draft does give me hope that I will one day not only see the Bears as winners of the NFC North and possibly Super Bowl champs if this pick pans out.

A lot of the press he has gotten since he was drafted has been negative, but I can’t wait to see Trubisky out on the field.
