Whitewater, Saco host golf meet in Malta

Saco and Whitewater put on their first joint golf meet at Marian Hills Golf Course in Malta on Tuesday, April 11.

The Glasgow Scotties won both the boys and girls team events. The top three teams in the girls meet were Glasgow with 322 strokes, Chinook was second with 386 and Malta third with 392. Scobey took fourth with 432.

The Boys had five teams present with Glasgow posting a top score of 279. Scobey was second with 336, Wolf Point was third with 348, Chinook was fourth with 349 and Harlem was fifth with 351.

The top three individual spots were commandeered by Glasgow in both girls and boys meets. The girls meet was won by Lexie Pehlke, who had a score of 95. Heidi Moon had 118 and took second and Fallon Larson had 118.

The boy's individual meet was won by Glasgow's Blaine Myrick who had 89 strokes. Oden Hallock also of Glasgow took second with 94 and Cody Ross of Glasgow took third with 96.

Saco's Jada Sudbrack took fifth with 123 strokes. Sudbrack felt good at her second hole of the day but not the first.

"The first hole was not good at all," she said. "It started out with just a horrible drive."

Sudbrack admitted the hard wind was not ideal.

"I'm a fair weather golfer," Sudbrack said. "I don't like to play when it's cold outside."

Sudbrack was happy about having a home meet.

"I think it's great. This is the first meet that Saco-Whitewater has ever put on," she said.

Saco's Jamison Schaaf posted a score of 132 and JV golfer Devon Salveson posted a score of 145.

Malta's Kloie Marks took sixth with 124 while fellow M-ette teammate Reba Doucette took seventh with 124.

"Kloie and Reba have put in some good consistent performances for us so far this season," Malta Coach Sean Estill said.

Malta's Chloe Hunter had 144 strokes and Caleigh Green had 162. Coach Estill praised his team for their efforts at the windy meet.

"I was really proud of the kids," Coach Estill said. "The conditions were miserable but each of the kids golfed right at their average or knocked a couple of strokes off of their average."

Malta only fielded two men's varsity golfers at the meet, Grayson Waters and Miles Bunk. Waters had a score of 118. He had 61 strokes on the front nine and 57 on the back nine. Bunk had a score of 132, 69 strokes in the first nine and 63 in the second nine.

Saco's Christian Menge has been a part of the Panthers golf team for all four years of high school. This meet was his first home meet. He had 122 strokes.

"It was good," he said. "I golfed well today. Better than last year. Averages have been going down."

He went on to say the day went well considering the 25 mph winds.

"I had a drive about 200 yards that was looking straight and then it just died and then it went in a ninety degree angle out of bounds," Menge said.

Camryn Messerly posted a score of 147 as Malta's lone woman JV golfer. She had an opening score of 69 and a second round score of 78.

In the men's JV Malta's Anthony Wegner had 153 strokes, with 75 in the front nine and 78 in the back nine. Jacob French had 155 strokes, with 81 in the front nine and 74 in the back nine.
