Out on the Missouri River Country, Charlie Stewart was engaged to help feed out a bunch of cattle owned by a prominent rancher. Apparently, the cows didn't take kindly to Charlie's presence. For the first time he entered the feedlot, a number of them charged him and knocked him off his feet. Charlie was rescued before he was badly hurt and when he arose he remarked to Norval Wallace, "When I die some folks are going to say it was whiskey that killed me, but personally I'm betting on those damned doggies of yours."

Schuyler Leedy was in from the river country reporting a successful wintering of his large herd of cattle. Others down there were not so fortunate. The Gallinger, Brandon and Garthofner families were flooded out by a rampaging Missouri River and lost all their household goods.

Ruby Gulch Mine not closing now, official says
Contradicting rumors that the Ruby Gulch Mine at Zortman, 50 miles southwest of Malta, would be forced to close due to difficulties in securing supplies and repairs because of war priorities, officers of the company stated here that the mine has secured a priority rating for repairs and maintenance and will continue to operate.
Zortman's periodic mining activity, extending over a half century, has made it a booming gold camp for a few years followed by several years of ghost town existence. To prevent it again becoming such a ghost town, operators of the mine and mill will continue in the face of difficulties presented by the war program.
