Memories for March 29, 2017

Taken from the 25 Years Ago Feature in the March 26, 1942 Edition of the PCN.

The Malta School Club was organized with Gordon Heath as president; Lloyd Kjos, vice president; Gladys Nielson, secretary, and Lealand Turpin, treasurer. Other members included Walter Henry, Viola Pancake, Lorin Stine, Verne Partridge, Kenneth Murray, Edna Robinson, John Garland and Georgia Tressler. The club was formed to discuss such matters as potato culture, current topics and home cookery. Mainly, we suspect, it was designed to give the young folks something to do.

Ye Ed philosophized a little about the health authority of the day who was worrying about the automobile riding habit making a legless race of Americans. The Enterprise agreed, but thought the theory applied more to pedestrians.

Other news of the week was that Charlie Secrest had bought a new Overland; Fred Robinson, the Wagner merchant, had been to town and the gun club had bought itself a new 24-foot motorboat for the convenience of the hunters on Bowdoin Lake.

New airport is possible for Malta

The needs of national defense may bring to Malta its long-sought airport, of sufficient size and score to provide for any ship which flies the airways today, according to information now in the hands of Mayor Hans Mebust and the city council.

If a parcel of land can be found conveniently located and suited to defense requirements it is possible that the federal government may construct emergency airport facilities here which later on can be maintained and adapted to civilian or commercial flying, the city fathers believe.

New Linotype added to News equipment

The News is pleased to announce this week the installation of a new Linotype which will go a long way toward making its mechanical equipment equal to the best the small shops of Montana can offer their customers.

Known as the Model 32, this Linotype is one of the latest machines designed by the Mergenthaler Linotype Company. A minute description of its typesetting qualities will mean nothing to non-printers, so we'll spare them the exultant details of which we ourselves are so proud. Let it suffice that this Linotype does mechanically about everything connected with the typesetting process except deliver a chocolate milkshake to the operator in mid-afternoon.

The Adams family goes to the movies

It's pure coincidence that the Addams Family - the movie -is the bill on the Villa Theatre marquee this week - the same week that the Adams family takes over as new owners of the vintage theatre.

But it's an appropriate coincidence.

Garry, Rosetta and Stormy Adams of Malta became owners of the theatre last Friday.

The Adams family, the real one, purchased the theatre from Richard Pancake who has owned it since 1977. He purchased it from his sister, Irene Veseth, who recently passed away.

The theatre was built in 1955.

Hit and run destroy fire hydrant, cuts off water to seven city establishments

A hit and run incident which destroyed a fire hydrant at the insertion of South First Street East and South First Avenue Monday night disrupted service to seven businesses located on in the area.

Public Works Director John Demarais said it will be "at least" several days before the damage is repaired and the water turned back on. The type of vehicle and the identification of the driver are unknown at this time.
