One Nation, Under God
Read Across America Day
In 1997 the NEA (National Education Association) began an annual celebration that has become known as “Read Across America Day.” The day they chose, March 2nd, is the birthday of Dr. Theodore Suess Geisel. In honor of the late children’s author…children, teens and adults are “encouraged to read and celebrate reading.”
On March 2, 2017, teachers, librarians and parents at Dodson School hosted and participated in our mentor-mentee activities to inspire a love for reading. We joined libraries, classrooms and organizations across America to read and acknowledge the academic and education value of such classics as; The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who, and Green Eggs and Ham.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, known all around the world as the beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss would have turned 113 years old Thursday, March 2. Dr. Seuss was not a real doctor. He studied English literature at Oxford after graduating Dartmouth but instead became a cartoonist. In 1955 Dartmouth awarded him an honorary doctorate. Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat because he was concerned about kids learning to read. A publisher challenged him to “write a story that first graders can’t put down.” Dr. Seuss has received two Emmy’s a Peabody and a Pulitzer Prize.
At Dodson, we honored Read Across America Day and the joy of reading. Thank you Dr. Seuss for your influence on so many young minds.
