One Nation, Under God
Welcome to new Post Mistress Barbara Brookie of Saco.
Get well wishes to Craig Mangis (Malta), Gary Anderson, Jessie Simonson and three children and Richard Dunbar and all who are sick.
Linda Berg’s sister, Laura and family, visited in Whitewater last weekend.
Congratulations to Janet Brown (my sis) on the birth of her first great grandbaby! Baby’s name is “Ella,” and her grandma is Carol — Janet’s daughter. Janet and Carrol are both former Whitewater residents and baby’s mom is Ouisha.
Joyce (Austin) Donavan of Kremlin requested a song played on KMMR radio in memory of her dad, Harry Austin (whose birthday was March 6.) Frank Moran, KMMR announcer, called me about the request.
Congratulations to Katherine (Ree) Simonson of Saco and Whitewater on getting her recipe for “6 Course Dinner” published in the Triangle Communications publication.
The snow is gone, but the winds are howling. Winter is not over yet.
In 1952, in March, we already had three feet of snow and it was cold. Then the temperature fell even more, down to 20-below, and the wind blew snow so hard that you couldn’t see your hand in front of you! It was probably the worst blizzard in Whitewater history! The school decided that it was not safe for the students to go home, even in town. So we had a “slumber party” in the school! We slept on the floor on top of drapes from the auditorium. We ate peanut butter sandwiches and sour cherries. Then we watched movies left by the GI training that was taught there (some were war movies which gave me nightmares.) Anyway, we were warm and safe. The “Blizzard Slumber Party” was a real experience!
Note: This was a chapter in my book “Hills Beyond Whitewater Creek Bridge.”
Signed,
Helen Austin
UPDATE: It was snowing on March 9 (and continued to through the weekend.)
