Superintendent McCandles and Milton I. Leydig were among the Zortmanites in Malta to participate in a damage suit involving the Ruby Gulch Mine. Court was being held in rooms in the Varney Building. A panel of 40 jurymen was exhausted and more names had to be drawn to secure a jury.

Saco was badly hit by a fire which destroyed the Windsor Hotel. The Jack McCormick Store was destroyed and offices occupied by Drs. Minnick and O'Keefe were damaged. Insurance policies had expired a short time previously and had not been renewed.

Discomfort was caused at the Fifth Avenue Hotel with a leaking boiler putting the furnace out of commission during a cold spell. Some oil heaters partly solved the problem in the main, but the guests kept warm by skipping rope and wearing their outdoor clothing.

Malta Guardsmen transferred to Engineer Regiment

Muskrat crop will be reduced by trapping
First trapping on the Lake Bowdoin Bird Refuge since the establishment of the wildfowl preserve in 1936 will begin this month by Elmer Knopfle and Roy Braaten. B.M. Hazeltine, manager, said the trappers will be allowed from 800 to 1,000 muskrats, half of which will be turned back to the government.
Trapping will be permitted this year due to the big increase in the last few years. In 1936 muskrats were practically extinct at Bowdoin Lake.
About 2,500 wild ducks are being fed this winter along the seepage spring below Nelson Reservoir by Hazeltine and Harry Cosner, Deputy game warden. Grain raised and harvested on the refuge is being used.

Boys will be boys and Shriners
will be Shriners ...
Shriners love children – and in the Malta Shrine Club is no exception.
The club recently acquired six riding lawn mowers which had been converted into racing on the goal of creating their own parade like other Shriners.
"There aren't many Shrine Clubs which don't have some kind of parade unit," said local Shriner Brent Waters.
Waters said two of the six new racing lawnmowers will do over 50 mph.
