Brenden, Stiles lead team to Rec. League Championship
In the Malta Parks & Recreation Adults Co-ed Basketball league, no team was more dominant than the P.C. Title Company and that dominance earned the team the league's inaugural trophy.
On Wednesday, February 22, the Title Co. defeated P.C. Insurance – Oh My Quad 71-51 in the league's championship game.
In the game, which featured many former high-school standouts Jeremy Brenden led the Title Co. with 22 points, 13 of which came in the first half Brenden had five treys. Kirk Stiles had 18 points and a pair of treys. Bobbi Knudsen had 12 points.
"We actually have an unselfish team," P.C. Title Owner and team captain Caitlyn Anderson told the PCN. "There was a lot of team work. We like to have a good time, have fun and make extra passes rather than worry about individual stats."
In the championship game, Jake Stuart led P.C. Insurance with 23 points, 15 of which came in the second half. RJ Tollefson had eight points and Larimie Scheffelmear had six.
Anderson was a part of Malta's 2007 Championship team along with Knudsen, who also won the 2010 title as an M-ette. The duo spent many years playing basketball together before Anderson's graduation in 2009.
"I've played with Bobbi for six or seven years," Anderson said. "We've played in spring and summer tournaments since junior high together. I hung it up after high school and obviously Bobbi went on to do awesome things collegiately and overseas."
Anderson was asked if she was able to feel some of the old chemistry she had before playing alongside Knudsen.
"Bobbi is such an unselfish player, she would make anyone look good," Anderson said.
Anderson now coaches the Malta Elementary School fifth grade girls' team and the Malta Middle School team.
Anderson was tasked with selecting the team's most valuable player in their undefeated season and went with Stiles, a former Mustang standout and Carroll College Hall of Famer. Stiles was a part of Malta's 1996 and 1998 State B Championship teams.
"I never heard about it until a month before they started this thing," Stiles said. "It was fun to get together and play with all the people you kind of played against and with, even though we are all pretty much out of shape."
Stiles scored 15 of his points in the first quarter of the championship game in which the P.C. Title Co. was up 45-19 by halftime.
"We made quite a few shots in the first half, so we just kind of tried to keep it going from there," Stiles said. "We got a little lazy in the second half but luckily we were up by thirty at some point. I think we played solid D in the first half. That's what got us through the whole thing."
Stiles admitted that a big part of their game plan was to get the ball to Knudsen, who had made plays under the basket and from the mid-range.
"It was a ton of fun," Anderson said. "As a parent having kids, it was just a nice opportunity to go do something with your friends as an adult, not at the bar."
