One Nation, Under God

My favorite storyteller

I will admit that reading has never been one of my favorite hobbies.

Maybe it’s an occupational thing but after writing several stories a week, unless it’s sports related, or something that grabs my attention, reading is the last thing I want to do.

I used to enjoy leisurely reading in my college years, which came as a shock to me but since my college years I haven’t picked up a book. It’s been almost eight years

My son loves his books. He probably owns more books than I have had throughout my whole life. He loves the books in which he can learn to identify new things. One of his favorite books includes an elephant that “Loves to go on a learning adventure.” It was a book given to him from his Grandma in Illinois.

Seeing him enjoy anything from my mother or father gives me a little pride because we only see them a few days of the year.

I admit I rarely read to PJ. Though he loves books, for the first two years of his life he wasn’t patient to just sit through a story. Always wanting to turn the page, he would not wait for mama or dada to read the story.

The other day as my wife and I were attempting to rest after an intense basketball session with PJ, he wanted us to read one of his Curious George books.

He typically goes to mama to read him a story but last Wednesday was different.

I started reading the book to him and to my surprise once I turned the page, he started reading. He was extremely patient, speaking a lot of words that probably only made sense to him.

It occurred to me that I was not reading to him but he was reading to me.

His soft reading voice must have been really soothing because it put his mother to sleep.

After he read the story, he was ready for bed without any fuss.It was a proud moment for me as a father.

Of course, I don’t know how long my son will love reading books. He might be a straight A student or a middle of the class guy like his dad, but seeing his love of books is a real encouragement.

He also loves sports. Anytime there is a game on the television, PJ plays and runs right alongside the professional athletes he sees.
