One Nation, Under God
The gymnasium at the Malta Elementary School was decorated with some 44 different Science Fair projects turned in by students from grades K though six last Tuesday and on Wednesday, the public was welcomed to the school for an award assembly.
Rachel Mortenson, Science Fair organizer for the past 11 years, said she feared the participants would be even fewer than 2016 low of 37, but was pleasantly surprised to see a trend prove false at this year’s event.
“Generally, the numbers go down each year,” she said prior to the assembly, "but the entries this year are wonderful and we had 52 students participate so this is just great. Thanks to all the parents, teachers, and individuals that help inspire and guide the students to build successful projects and all should be complemented.”
Sixth grade students Dre Oshio and Lane Thompson each earned Six Year Awards for completing science projects each year since the first grade. The young men were awarded a Sacagawea coin and a certificate for their continuous participation in the science fair.
Thompson was one of three sixth grade students who scored identical scores on their science projects this year and each earned a first place medal on Wednesday, tying for first with Seth Siewing and Izzie Hallenburg.
Students were judged by Pat Hickey, Fritz Prelwitz, Russ Osmundson, Bobbi Knudsen , Ashley Gordon, Gretchen Boardman, Orvin Solberg, Stacy Moore, Wendy Majerus, Mark Nathe, DeeDee Hanson and Pastor Kent Gordon.
"The judges had many wonderful comments about the uniqueness and quality of this year’s projects and loved listening to the students present,” Mortenson said.
A total of 15 kindergarteners participated in the science fair this year. Ms. Bates brought down six AP Biology Students, Taylor Eggebrecht, Reba Doucette, Bella Mackey, Macy Knudsen, Billie Orahood, and Joanie Sjostrom, to listen to the kindergartners and judge them on their projects or collections. All received a Participation Certificate and ribbon.
