One Nation, Under God

Malta News for March 1, 2017

A young woman died last Friday morning when the pickup she was driving on Southbound Highway 191 went through a fence, hit a tree and then caught fire.

The accident occurred at 5:10 a.m. near Green Acres Lane and took the life of Jessie M. Crowder, 25, who was announced dead at the scene of the crash.

Crowder was a customer and co-worker’s favorite at the Great Northern Motel where she worked at the front desk and in the kitchen. Rest in peace, you are dearly missed.

A blown transformer in the Malta City and outlying areas of town caused a loss of power for up to five hours on Friday night.

Driving the streets of Malta at 8 p.m. was an eerie spectacle as local businesses had to shutdown for a spell, Including the Villa Theatre which was in the middle of showing a movie (the Villa offered Friday night’s customers a free return visit to see the flick on Saturday.) KMMR, in the middle of airing the M-ettes playing Fairfield in the Northern B Divisional Championship game, was also off the air for a spell before the radio signal picked up again in time to broadcast the Malta girls one point, last second win (a game which also saw M-ette standout Sophia Stiles become the school’s all-time scoring and assist leader.)

Lights across the entire town were out for about 50 minutes before Northwestern Energy employees were able to get the power back on. Others living outside of the City, including Pete Dalby who lives six miles east of Malta, were without power until about 1 a.m.
