One Nation, Under God
The Dodson Coyotes and North Country Mavericks both had their first regular season games at the Glasgow Showcase in December. Both teams hope that their 2016-17 journeys won’t end there.
Earning the third seed in the 3C District, the Mavericks will take on Dodson, who finished sixth in the district. With both teams needing to win at least two games to continue on to the Eastern Divisional in Wolf Point on February 25. Their game is scheduled for Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
The winner of the Maverick / Coyotes game will face Frazer who has earned a first round bye.
On the other side of the bracket, Scobey will take on the winner of the Lustre / Nashua game which is scheduled to kick off the tournament on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
The Eastern Divisional will consist of three of the six teams that make up 3C and five of the ten teams that make up the 2C district.
North Country is coming off of a 79-78 win over Frazer last Saturday in the team’s season ender.
“We had nothing to lose,” Mavs Coach Barry Malone said. “Frazer had the number one seed at stake. Our kids had nothing to lose. They could show how good they were or we could’ve sat back and played a good game and end up third. But they wanted to prove something.”
Cache Younkin exploded for a team-high 32 points, Trace Simonson added 23 points and Logan McColly scored 16.
Dodson lost their last game 50-36 Lustre last Saturday in Dodson. Shaun Ball had 18 points and Tyrese Messerly scored six points.
“We are focusing on defense, boxing out and playing team ball,” Dodson Coach Frank Benson said. “We’re working on playing defense with our feet and not with our hands. There are a million things we need to work on but mostly getting the ball into the basket.”
He also mentioned that the last time the Coyotes played the Mavs, they gave up way too many open shots.
