Coyotes get their first win against a varsity opponent in four years
Never again can it be said that the Dodson Coyote's last conference win was in the 2013 District tournament as the Coyotes dismantled the Nashua Porcupines 62-46 last Friday night.
The Coyotes earned their first conference win in nearly four years behind a 16 point effort from Tyrese Messerly and 14 from Shaun Ball.
"It feels great," Walker said. "I know people were talking saying, we only got a win over a JV team but now that we got a win over a varsity team. That should prove something. We go out there and giving it our best and we should be given a little bit of credit."
Corbin LoneBear scored nine in the win, while Jaynes and Walker scored eight points. Jasper Doney scored all seven of his points in the fourth quarter with only one foul to give. The game marked the second consecutive game that Doney was able to overcome foul trouble.
Trevor Walker was asked about the team's win.
"Just going out there and giving it our best," Walker said. "They say if you have fun it brings out the best. We went out there and we had fun and we gave it our all. That's all a person can do is give their effort. We gave a lot of it."
Dodson went toe to toe with Nashua in the first, taking a 13-12 lead at the end of the opening period. Jaynes began the game with a hot hand knocking down two treys.
The Coyotes went on a 7-0 run late in the second quarter, outscoring Nashua 13-10 in the period. The halftime score was 26-22.
Dodson would continue to outscore their opponent, racking up 15 points in the third while holding Nashua to 10.
Dodson was able to get to the charity stripe for nine shot attempts in the fourth quarter, knocking down seven attempts and scoring 21 points in that period. Nashua was held to 14 points, with Dodson leading by as much as 24 in the fourth.
Dodson was 9-of-13 from the free throw line, while Nashua was 9-of-20. Dodson also found an advantage from long range knocking down a total of five treys. Nashua hit three treys.
Jaynes has said in a previous interview that he could see the team moving up in the 3C rankings, this win was a testament to his belief.
"We know we are good," Jaynes said. "It was just a matter of time before we started clicking and other teams start realizing that we are a team that's going to be around for a while and it's going to be good for years to come."
Dodson will be tasked to face Roy-Winifred and Winnett Grass Range, teams that have given the Coyotes a lot of trouble this year, but the team believes they can still win.
"We gotta come out with the same intensity that we came out with in the last two games," Jaynes said. "We gave it a good shot against the number one team in the conference and we have beaten the fourth team in our conference, so if we come out with good intensity, play our defense, play our tempo and be ready to play like we had the last couple of weeks."
Walker has been the team's spark plug on defense, creating chaos for opposing teams.
"Every game before I come out, I eat a bowl of effort," Walker said. "You give it all heart, you never get let down."
