Lady Coyotes win!

Strong second half powers Dodson to victory over Nashua

The Dodson Lady Coyotes had one game last weekend and the team made the most of it, defeating the Nashua Lady Porcupines 47-37 in Dodson last Friday night.

The team was lead by eighth grader Melony Fetter, who scored 22 points, while knocking down 13 of her 19 attempts at the free throw line.

Fetter was attacking the lane early and got to the free throw line four times early in the first quarter. She was 6-of-8 in the quarter and scored 9-of Dodson's 11 first quarter points, keeping stride with Nashua who also scored 11 in the first.

"We're always up and ready to play a game, anytime, any day," Fetter said. "It doesn't matter who the team is. We are always ready. We are physically and mentally prepared to play anybody."

According to Fetter, teamwork was the key to their victory over Nashua.

"Teamwork makes the dream work," said Christina Jaynes.

Jaynes, a team captain had nine points, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. Mickayla Runsabove had seven points. Team captain Donna Dale had five points in the win.

"We were able to keep our heads in play as a team and played through everything that happened tonight," Dale said.

In the third quarter, the team proved that they could grab offensive boards, racking up five rebounds in one possession, though the team was unable to score. They would still outscore Nashua 10-6 in that period.

"We finally started playing as a team," Jaynes said. "We found the other team's weaknesses and just kept taking it to them."

Dodson stayed aggressive in the fourth, driving down the lane and drawing a total 15 attempts at the charity stripe. Though the team would miss 10 of those attempts the team was able to outscore Nashua 17-10 in the final quarter, giving them the win.

Dale, a junior, who has played with the Lady Coyotes since her eighth grade year has seen growth with the young team.

"It's had its ups and downs but I'm glad we are finally coming and playing together as we know (we can)," Dale said. "Since we are a young team, I will be looking forward to playing with them again next year, my senior year."

The Lady Coyotes missed out of divisionals last season, but the team hopes to punch their ticket to the Eastern C Divisional this season.

"We need to keep our heads, keep playing as a team, keep finding the opposing team's weaknesses and taking it to them," Jaynes said. "There's nothing else you can do."

The Lady Coyotes were 19-of-41 from the charity stripe and Dale believes that will be a major emphasis during the team's practices as the team gears up to take on Roy-Winifred on Thursday night in Dodson. They will also see Winnett-Grass Range on Friday night in Dodson.
