Schumacher Memorial Livestock Day

The annual Jim Schumacher Memorial Livestock Day will be held Monday, February 6 starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Great Northern Lodge room. The Malta Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will be sponsoring the lunch. The following is a list of speakers and times.

• 10:30 a.m. – The Tuberculosis (TB) issue in Canada will be discussed including screening and testing protocols, transmission, and implications for US producers, as well as the history of TB in livestock presented by Dr. Rick Levesque.

• 11:30 a.m. – Drug resistance in the meat supply. Can you really get drug resistance from eating a hamburger? Dr. Joseph Perrone, internal medical doctor and host of Accountable Science, will discuss resistance in humans and if meat that you consume is a contribution to the problem.

• 12:30 p.m. – Lunch sponsored by Malta Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture

• 1:30 p.m. – Curt Pate will discuss and demonstrate some cattle handling facilities, how many animals to load in a working alley for ease of handling, and general best management practices when handling livestock.

• 2:30 p.m. – Dr. Andy Roberts of the Fort Keogh Range Livestock Research Station will discuss the results of a 10-year heifer development study. Management is one way to increase efficiency and Dr. Robert will demonstrate how he has achieved some gains in efficiency of heifer development as well as cow longevity.
