One Nation, Under God
The North Country Mavericks overcame a slow start against the Lustre Lions in their lone game of the week. The team was led by junior Jada Sudbrack who had 16 points and eighth grader Kaitlyn McColly who had 10 in the Maverick's 46-36 win.
Cummings, a team captain admitted that though they won, things did not go according to plan.
"We wanted to move the ball and keep them without any threes but we didn't do that," Cummings said. "We wanted to keep them under 30 and we didn't do that. That was our goal but we worked hard."
The Lady Mavericks only put up four points in the first quarter, while giving up seven points, six of which came from a pair of treys from Kylie Kirkaldie.
"The first half was a little messy," Co-captain Mickayla Johnson said.
She explained that the defense wasn't getting down the court and moving as fast as they should have.
"On offense we weren't penetrating and our outside shots weren't falling so we were just struggling," Johnson said. "It was just a little bit of a slow start."
Though things weren't working early, the Lady Mavericks were able to find a strong rhythm in the second half outscoring Lustre 17-4. The halftime score was 21-11.
"I'm proud of us for pulling it together in the second half and getting after it," Cummings said.
The Mavericks were outscored 12-10 in the third period, leaving the score 31-23 at the start of the fourth.
The team started attacking the post late in the game and Johnson racked up seven of the team's 15 points, while the team gave up only 13.
"We wanted to go to the hole so we could draw some fouls to get more points," Cummings said.
Like their effort to attack the paint in the game, Johnson and Cummings have been trying to improve their game and themselves in 2017.
"I don't have a specific resolution but you always try to be better every year," Johnson said. "Sometimes you fail but it's always the goal to get better."
In her senior year, Cummings noted one thing she would like to see improve before the season ends.
"Probably to score more because I'm not much of a scorer, I guess," Cummings said.
Johnson shared her thought on what she would like to see from herself before the season ends.
"My goal is to be the dominant post that I know I can be," Johnson said. "I mean, I am taller than all of the girls in our district and I think that I should be a lot more of a force to be reckoned with. That's my goal, to go harder."
