Jaynes, Fetter score 20 a piece in loss; Team defeats Harlem JV
The Lady Coyotes were able to go toe to toe with the Frazer Bearcubs last Friday, but eventually fell behind in the second half to lose 69-56. The loss came after the lady Coyotes defeated Harlem’s JV 54-43 on Tuesday, January 10.
In their win against Harlem, the team was led by junior Donna Dale and eighth grader Melony Fetter who both had 19 points apiece.
“Donna Dale, our junior, our captain stepped up,” Dodson Head Coach Deserae Kill Eagle said. “Her shooting percentage was outrageous that night. She came in pumped up, fired up.”
Dale had scored 11 of Dodson’s 15 first quarter points. The Lady Coyotes defense only gave up four points that quarter. They would again outscore Harlem 15 to 10 in the second quarter. The halftime score was 30-14.
The Wildcats would outscore Dodson 13-11 in the third quarter. Harlem’s S. Talks Different led the charge scoring six in that period.
The Wildcats would again outscore Dodson 16-13 in the fourth but the Lady Coyotes held on to win 54-43.
Dodson came into the Harlem game prepared, knowing many of their Wildcat opponents.
“They had a little more confidence because they knew how the girls play,” Coach Kill Eagle said. “So of course they had more confidence going into that game. They played like a team.”
The game came one day after Dodson Public Schools had a snow day, which meant the team had an extra day of rest.
“The girls were fired up for that game and they played so well and we got a ton of compliments,” Coach Kill Eagle said. “They did what they needed to do.”
The girls were unable to anticipate their game against Frazer because it was cancelled and then out of nowhere the team learned that they were playing Frazer the day of the game.
“They were finding out, while they were half asleep coming to school that we have a game this evening,” Coach Kill Eagle said.
Coach Kill Eagle also noted that many of the Lady Coyotes were under the weather and were even trying to keep their food down while the game was happening.
“Mentally I don’t think they were prepared going into this game,” Coach Kill Eagle said. “Also considering the energy and that we had three girls trying not to throw up they did good.”
Freshman Christina Jaynes was one of the athletes afflicted with cold/flu symptoms during the game but she scored 20 points and racked up 18 rebounds. She was 7-of-14 from the charity stripe. Fetter also had 20 points.
“Rebounds are huge for us,” Coach Kill Eagle said. “We talk about boxing out all of the time.”
Rebounding hasn’t been the only improvement that Coach Kill Eagle mentioned.
“We’ve been working on screen and rolls, give and gos,” she said. “We did that tonight, so things like that make us happy.”
The team wasn’t happy with the end score, but Coach Kill Eagle expressed pride in her team.
“I’m proud of them,” Coach Kill Eagle said. “Yes, I wish we could’ve done things differently and better but I think that’s every coach. We are going to learn from it. We are going to watch game tape and see what we need to do. We are excited and we are going to learn from each game.”
