One Nation, Under God
The Dodson Lady Coyotes have had one game this season that ended in a 48-22 loss to the Plentywood Wildcats at the 2016 Glasgow Class C Showcase, held on Saturday, December 3.
The team was led by freshman Christina Jaynes, who scored eight points and knocked down two treys. Donna Dale had six points. Both Melony Fetter and Mikaeya Runs Above had four points each.
Dodson fell behind earlier, giving up 21 points to the Wildcats, while only scoring two points of their own. The deficit could be strongly attributed to first game jitters.
“We lost by 26 points but the girls were literally shaking,” Dodson Head Coach Deserae Kill Eagle said. “We have a young team other than our junior and sophomore that start. The only one that wasn’t that nervous was our junior but the rest were scared.”
The rest of the game went a little smoother for the young team as they only surrendered scores of nine, 12 and six in the remaining quarters, while scoring five, five, and 10 points respectively.
According to Coach Kill Eagle, the team was eventually able to get over their jitters by halftime.
“They played defense, moved and finally acted like they could drive,” Coach Kill Eagle said.
The jitters could also be attributed to the fact that many of the Lady Coyotes are new to the game and team.
“They didn’t do too bad,” Coach Kill Eagle said of her team. “I really appreciated the Plentywood coach, he was really supportive but Plentywood was a solid team. They are solid in their rebounding, their jump shots. They know what they need to do and they do it very sound.”
Coach Kill Eagle believes that it would’ve been a different game if the first game jitters didn’t hit the Lady Coyotes.
In Coach Kill Eagle’s first game with her team, she noticed a few players that stood out.
“Based off of that game our freshman Christina Jaynes (stood out) once she got over the first game jitters and realized that she could do this, she started rebounding, stealing the ball down low and she knocked down two three-pointers.”
Coach Kill Eagle was also impressed by third year starter Dale, the team’s captain that night.
“She was the only one that came out not nervous,” Coach Kill Eagle said. “She’s just always a natural leader. She just steps up without me having to say anything. She never gets frustrated; she just does what she needs to do… So that centers our team.”
She was proud of her other players that stepped up as the game went on, including Fetter, an eighth grader.
“She really didn’t start playing until the fourth quarter,” Coach Kill Eagle said. “She started stealing the ball and shooting. I really hope now that we got the first game jitters out of the way, I’m hoping we can see her play four quarters like that.”
The team played the Turner Tornadoes on Tuesday night, which will be reported for next week’s Phillips County News.
The team will travel to Scobey to take on the Lady Spartans this Friday night.
