One Nation, Under God
Once a week I get to jump into the way-back machine and look at the news worthy to print from 100, 75, 50, 25 and 10 years ago. I find it fascinating to see how printing techniques, pages dimensions and journalism has changed over the years and to see (unfortunately) how businesses, industry and population has dropped in this county over its 101 years history.
Last week, while researching for the Memories feature for this week’s paper, I came across a series of wonderful stories written by Linda Link entitled Collector’s Corner in which she gracefully wrote about folks around the county whose hobbies included accumulating all types of items.
Linda’s first feature was on Jim and Leila Sintler – Jim a collector of toy tractors, Leila’s was Precious Moments figurines. I talked to Linda on Wednesday morning and she said she came up with the feature idea because, as a collector herself, she was interested in what other people’s passions were. (She added that she collects everything from cast iron banks to pin cushions and almost everything in between.)
Linda’s stories have inspired me to bring back the Collector’s Corner, both updating past people featured in the story and adding new ones. Linda said that she knows a certain someone one who collects teapots so I will be reaching out to said person to see if I can feature them soon.
Do you collect something that you are passionate about?
Maybe someone you know collects beer cans, baseball cards, Barbie dolls or barbed wire pieces.
If either are the case, drop me a line at [email protected] or give a call at the office (654-2020) and let’s see what you got. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Whether trash or treasure, let me come bother you for an afternoon and talk about what you collect.
Happy hoarding and aloha.
