One Nation, Under God

So, maybe the end is near

Well, the election is over (unless you are reading this on Tuesday night…if that is the case, use your imagination.) In previous columns, people who have said the “world will end” and point to a civil war depending on which candidate for president was crowned winner have been called to the carpet and asked to stop that idiotic notion. Well, if sports are any indication, maybe they were correct.

Last Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs did away with the Curse of the Billy Goat and came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the Major League Baseball World Series for the first time since 1908. The Cubbies are “lovable losers” no more and according to Facebook, nearly 75-percent of the people I know throughout the world are lifelong Cubs fans, though this wasn’t known until about a week ago. Nothing I dislike more than a bandwagon sports fan, but to you real Cubbies fans, congrats. Here’s to starting another 108-year curse, eh?

Another sign of the possible end of times is my Oakland Raiders winning their seventh game of the season against the much-hated Denver Broncos on Sunday football by a tally of 30-20 to sit alone atop the AFC West. The boys in Silver and Black pummeled those blue and orange donkeys and the Raiders are off to their best start since 2002 (the year in which the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lambasted my team in the Super Bowl, 48-21, and gave our former head coach Jon Gruden his lone championship.)

The win against the Broncos is extra special to this Raiders’ fan as the next-door neighbors to left and right of me – Trevor Simser to the left and Bob Olson to right – are both Denver fans. They got to stare at my Silver and Black Raiders flag flying proudly all day on Monday and the weather holds, most likely for the rest of the week. (To Trevor’s credit, he IS a life-long Cubs fan so I imagine the World Series Championship takes a bit of the sting away from his Broncos going down).

Is the end of the world really upon us?

Doubtful.

But If the Raiders continue to win and I continue to hoist my colors in my front yard, my end might truly be near because I don’t know how much ribbing Trevor and Bob can take …good luck with that, boys.

Remember, whoever wins the presidency, he/she is all our president and should be treated as so. Also, remember, real men wear black.

Touchdown Raaaaaaaaaiiiiiiders!

Thanks for reading and aloha.
