One Nation, Under God

Phillips County Museum News for November 2, 2016

History is an amazing thing. Each generation creates their individual history yet if we look back we sometimes find a time in history that is similar to events that this generation feels is uniquely ours. The book “Popular to Papua” is an example of this. The story is set during World War II. It is a story of Montana National Guard’s 163rd Infantry Regiment and how they took part in World War II. (Did you think that Desert Storm was the first time a National Guard Unit was called up?) It’s a story of young men that joined the guard to earn the $1.00 a day which was “big money” and was certainly a help to the family. Does this sound familiar to anyone? The book is a story of the 1500 young men who left Montana to fight in the South Pacific. Some of the names that are listed in the book are familiar to residents of Phillips County. Do you remember…Lynn Bain, Willard Brandon, John Brayton, Wendell Holmquist, George Hoover, Gilbert Horn, Jesse Horn, Gilbert Horseman, George Hoynes, George Humphreys, Francis Schwartz, Donald Smith, James Wilson, Harold Undheim, Vernon Vert, Arnold Pope?? These are just a few of the names from Phillips County that served. As always a big thank-you to those that have served in the military and those that are serving! This book can be found in the Phillips County Museum gift shop. Museum hours are 10-5 Monday through Saturday.
