Woman's Club News
One of the notable events of the year for the Malta Woman's Club took place on Saturday when the Dodson and Saco Clubs were entertained by the local club women. These three organizations are the largest of their kind in Phillips County, and this get-together spirit will foster closer ties and cooperation for the women's interests in the county. A large representation of both visiting clubs arrived on the morning trains and all three organizations were served with a sumptuous dinner in the Odd Fellow's Hall at St. Mary's Guild.
Mrs. J.F. Kilduff gave a few words of cordial welcome to the guests, and toasts were responded to by Mrs. Cherry and Mrs. Taylor of Saco, Miss Ryan, Mrs. Mary E. Jones and Mrs. Dudley Jones of Dodson and Mrs. Best of Malta, with Mrs. Parker as toastmistress.
Will alcohol become gasoline substitute?
Increased industrial values of alcohol and the possibility of its substitution for gasoline in the near future were discussed in New York recently by chemists attending the National Exposition of Chemical Industries.
Dr. Little declared that alcohol is the best fuel for internal combustion engines, as benzol, which has been suggested as a substitute for gasoline, is not sufficiently plentiful to keep the 3,000,000 automobiles in the country going for two days. Kerosene, he added, was out of the question.
"There are 10,000,000 tons of material every year in this country from which alcohol can be made," he said.

Mayor urges citizens to buy Defense Bonds
Mayor H.G. Mebust urges all citizens to participate regularly in the defense saving program to the limit of their ability and to cooperate with the county defense savings committee, of which R. G. Monroe is chairman.
"All organizations should devote at least one meeting, in accordance with the proclamation of Governor S.C. Ford, to a discussion of methods of preventing inflation during the week of November 2 to 8," Mayor Mebust said. "Dollars saved today will bolster national and individual security during the post war period."
Underhanded work is suspected in prairie fire
Sheriff's officers are working on the theory that a rider maliciously started a prairie fire Sunday which for several hours threatened to destroy thousands of acres of winter range in the Telegraph Creek area. Evidence is being carefully checked.
The fire was started in an inaccessible spot not far from the road and had burned a large tract of land before being discovered. Ranchers fought the blaze soon after it was discovered and brought it under control.
Undersheriff Frank Partridge said that he believed a man on horseback had started the fire with matches. Several fires which destroyed hundreds of acres of range last summer had all the earmarks of having been started by persons with ulterior motives. Secretary Dale Waters of the Phillips County Grazing Association said that no effort will be spared to seek out those with criminal intent of starting fires on the prairie.

Busy night for vandals on Halloween
Halloween pranksters were kept busy with vandalism in the business district Monday night. The group was running in a pack which included about 100 persons in the early part of the evening. Rocks were thrown through windows at Zane Robinson's place of business and at a moving train. Cherry bombs were thrown at gasoline bulk tanks. One lady reported the screen door had been torn off her home. Einar Olson's trailer was tipped over in the street in front of the store and loose milk crates were scattered. Machinery and pickups were pushed out in the streets and blocked the underpass. Cars parked on Front Street had the air let out of the tires. Eggs and tomatoes were also thrown in the downtown area where most of the vandalism occurred. A Malta resident's house was pelted with eggs. Kids riding in the back of pickups threw glass bottles and jars in the street.
"Trick or treaters" on the smaller side seemed to settle for a few remarks on the sidewalks.

Conrad, cold are playoff foes
They say the playoffs mark the start of a new season, but the first round playoff game this Saturday in Malta between the hometown Mustangs and the Conrad Cowboys has the look of a rerun.
And the Mustangs are hoping it's a rerun with the same ending.
Malta opened up league play on its way to a perfect 8-0 season with a 13-7 victory over the Cowboys with a score in the final minutes of play that broke a 6-6 deadlock.
Malta Coach Scott King says the important thing he has to do "is make our kids understand that everybody is starting with a 0-0 record and although Conrad's season (5-3-1) didn't go to their expectations, now they have a chance to revive themselves.
The weather isn't doing either team any favors. Both have been practicing in single digit temperatures at times, but Conrad had six inches of snow on the ground with only about an inch in Malta.
"Prospects for the weather on Saturday call for a cold afternoon. Wind, I think, is the big thing," Coach King added. "It can make a decent day miserable and it reduces what you can do more than anything else."

Malta downs Choteau 37-10 to move to quarterfinal game Saturday at home
"Business like" is how Coach Scott King described the Malta Mustang's 37-10 performance against the Choteau Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in a first round playoff game.
The Mustangs will have to be business like when they play the undefeated champions of District B, 8-0 Superior, in quarterfinal action.
The meeting in Malta will mark the first time the two teams have played each other on the gridiron.
