One Nation, Under God

Robert Hayes Johnston

Our dearly loved Bob, age 75, passed away gently on October 6th, 2016 from an apparent heart attack at his vacation cabin on the Nelson Reservoir in Eastern Montana.

He was born in Kirkland, Wash., in December 1940 and grew up in Kent, Wash., with his mother Ann and stepfather, Harold Johnston.

He attended WSU and later graduated from the U of W, although he always remained a “Coug”.

In 1963, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Sandy, spending 53 wonderful years together.

With his degrees in Psychology and Public Administration, he spent 30 years working as a probation officer and administrator for the Pierce County Juvenile Court, retiring in 1994.

Bob was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and an avid reader on many subjects. He trained and field trailed his own German Shorthaired Pointers for over 50 years with several of them becoming AKC field trial champions. Bob enjoyed bird hunting and exploring the countryside of Washington, Montana, and Arizona, always eager to see what was over the hill.

He leaves his wife Sandy, daughter Valerie, son Bob (Beth), grandson Garrett, brother Mike (Bev), adopted sisters Pat, Lana, and Myrna, adopted brother Tim, and nephews Greg (Cindy), Mark (Beth), and David (Joann).

Bob will be missed at the Curtis High School basketball games that he attended every season since 1982, but perhaps not necessarily by the referees.

There will be no service at his request. We hope all his wonderful friends and relatives will give him a toast and continue to relate their famous “Bob” stories. He was one of the best of the good guys.

Donations may be made to the Tone Resource Center (assisting homeless children and their families) 3611 S. G St., Tacoma, WA, 98418, Attn: Linda Martin.
