One Nation, Under God
A recent donation to the PC Museum prompted a discussion on fraternal organizations. Different fraternal organizations trace their beginnings back to ancient Greece and Rome. The United States is especially dynamic in these types of organizations where the freedom to associate outside of government regulations is expressly sanctioned by law. A collection of items from the “Victory Knitting Club” proved interesting reading. The club was organized in 1918 during World War I. Their purpose was to provide warm items of clothing for “our soldier boys”. The club maintained a membership roll of about 20 for years. These dedicated ladies also donated to the Cancer Fund, Red Cross, March of Dimes, Yellowstone Boys Ranch, etc. In 1959 the ladies celebrated in Malta’s 50 year celebration of incorporation with an entry in the parade. Sadly in 1990 the club disbanded. On a personal note – I discovered that my great grandmother was a charter member in the Victory Knitting Club. WAY TO GO, Grandma!
