One Nation, Under God
After losing the first set to the Harlem Ladycats on Thursday, October 6, in Harlem, the Malta M-ettes had a team discussion that would inspire the team to come back and not only win the remaining sets but completely dominate the game. The scores were 18-25, 25-7, 25-5 and 25-19.
The M-ettes were led by Ella Schye who had 16 kills and six blocks. Sam Mitchell had 21 digs and Kyleigh Schipman led in aces with five and in assists with 14.
“We started off a little slow in the first set,” Coach Tasha Hines told the PCN. “But then we came back and absolutely dominated in the second, third and fourth sets.”
The team was put off balance by a Harlem server who racked up seven aces in the first set. The team also had a lot of serving errors. Determined not to let Harlem’s moment translate into a win, Malta had a discussion that turned the tide of the game.
“We just had one of our talks,” Coach Hines said. “We are going to stop this train, turn it around, we are going to play forward and do what we know how to do, which is serve, hit, dig and do all of the things we know how to do well. And then they did.”
The team will host the North Country Mavericks on Thursday, October 13, with games starting at 3:30 p.m. and then host Poplar on Saturday, October 15, for Malta’s senior night with games starting at 1:00 p.m.
