Malta Parks and Recreation has been extremely busy this year, starting a youth soccer league, adult softball league and other events around town and their efforts to keep the town of Malta moving will continue on Tuesday, October 18 as Parks and Rec will kick off its first season of Co-ed Volleyball.
The idea was triggered by both Parks and Recreation managers Natalie Judd and Julia Tatafu.
“Ever since I got to Malta, I was surprised that we didn’t have a City-league team at all,” Tatafu said. “That was something that I’ve always played on in different towns that I have lived in and so did Natalie.”
The duo proceeded to ask around the community for interest.
“We thought, let’s do it, go for it and see how it goes,” Tatafu said.
The first game will be at 7:00 p.m. at the City Hall. The season will continue for six weeks and will conclude on Tuesday, November 22. Though games will be held at City Hall, the group may expand to the Old Gym depending on how many teams sign up.
Registration for volleyball started on Monday, September 19 and will close on Tuesday, October 11th.
“I think there’s a lot of excitement,” Tatafu said. “It is co-ed and you don’t necessarily need to have males on your team to play.”
The league will allow all-female teams; however for males to play the teams are only allowed three males on the court at one time.
Tatafu went on to say the teams will have to alternate male, female, male, female while serving.
If you are interested in playing but can’t put a team together then you can sign up individually.
“If we can get enough individuals to sign up they make their own team,” Tatafu said, noting that if there weren’t enough people to form teams then team captains would be called.
The format of the league will be six on six and the team that wins two or three sets, will win the game. The court will be at regulation size and the net will be set at 7-11 5/8.
“The first two sets will go to 25 and the third game, if need will go to 15,” Tatafu said.
The cost for signing up will be $150 per team or $15 individually. Each team can have up to 15 players over age 18.
The league will finish with a single elimination tournament on November 22.For more information call 406-654-4178 or 520-686-0986.
