The North Country Mavericks may not have been full strength against the Glasgow Scotties JV team, but the team defeated Glasgow 3-0. The scores were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-21. The team later lost a game to the Malta M-ettes in Whitewater.
In their win against Glasgow JV, the Mavericks were led by Jada Sudbrack who had eight of 20 team kills. Mickayla Johnson had seven kills and had the team’s two blocks. Bailey Funk had four of 11 aces and Casity Boucher had 17 of the team’s 19 assists.
“Our serve-receive was kind of sloppy but when we got the ball up, kids were knocking them down,” Mavericks Head Coach Barry Malone said. “When we got them up, our hitters definitely put the ball away.”
The team didn’t down a team as prominent at the Scottie Varsity team but the win served as a confidence booster.
“They are younger kids that probably weren’t as strong at the net as their older kids,” Coach Malone said.
The Mavericks have had their fair share of injuries throughout the season, including a thumb injury to Sudbrack, who is an All-Conference hitter.
“She’s still playing hurt but even with her hurt hand she came through with some big hits,” Coach Malone said.
Coach Malone also praised his team’s efforts serving.
“We had some serves that went into the net but boy we had some serves that were pretty hard to handle,” Coach Malone said. “Bailey showed that with her four aces.”
Libero Payton Chopper also made her season debut against Glasgow JV. Coach Malone praised Chopper for her help defending hits and serves as well as her serving skills.
“If a ball comes her way, they don’t drop very often,” Coach Malone said. “She gets her hands on them.”
