One Nation, Under God
The Malta M-ettes picked up their first win in over a week after defeating the North Country Mavericks in Whitewater on Friday. The win was long needed for an M-ette team that has struggled to win a single set. The team won 3-1 with scores of 22-25, 25-15, 25-18 and 25-21. Malta lost to Wolf Point on Saturday, October 1.
In their win against North Country, the M-ettes were led by Ella Schye who had 12 of 33 team kills and three of 10 aces. Julia Meisdalen had three of six team blocks. Kyleigh Schipman had 15 of 80 digs and Sam Mitchell had 15 of 26 assists.
"It feels really good," Schye said about getting the win.
The Mavericks were led by Mickayla Johnson who had 11 of 22 team kills and the Mavericks' lone block. Casity Boucher had 14 of 17 assists. Kayleigh Cummings had six of 21 digs.
North Country came out with a hot start with solid serving from Jada Sudbrack and Payton Chopper. Malta couldn't overcome several hitting and serving errors in the set.
The M-ettes would bounce back in the second set thanks to some solid attacks. The team would not look back capitalizing on several hitting and serving errors from a Mavericks team that struggled against an aggressive Malta frontline.
"The communication (was right) and we stayed positive throughout the whole thing," M-ette senior Rheanna Messerly said.
North Country boasts a pair of tall, solid hitters in Johnson and Sudbrack but Malta's hitters having similar height weren't too surprised.
"I feel like we go against other teams that are tall," said Schye who is listed at just less than six foot. "Like, Wolf Point and Glasgow."
Messerly is listed at 5'4", but she fared well picking up a kill or two that night.
"It's pretty intimidating but I have a pretty good vertical, so I can stick with them," Messerly said.
Sophomore Kloie Marks saw some time with the varsity team and showed impressive prowess in all phases.
"It's nice to have older girls to help you out and tell you where you need to be," Marks said.
Marks went on to say that the age doesn't intimidate her as much as a height disadvantage.
Messerly used a close-handed serve that proved effective in the game.
"You have to be mentally ready and think you're going to make it over otherwise you probably won't," Messerly said.
The Froshmore team also picked up a win against the Mavericks JV squad, winning the game 3-1.
"We had a rough start but they got it together, cheered each other on, lifted each other up and they were good after that," M-ette Froshmore Coach Cheyenne Young said.
Coach Young praised Kaylanna Bain for her serving and hitting and also noted that Carly Garfield had a solid game.
"She really stepped up tonight when we needed her," Coach Young said. "Carly Garfield had a good hitting game too. The entire team was aggressive at the net when we needed to be. It was nice."
Malta's varsity lost their next game to Wolf Point in three sets, those scores were 25-12, 25-20 and 25-23.
Malta was led by Meisdalen who had six kills. Mitchell had twelve digs. Chanel Lett had two aces. Schipman had 13 assists.
Wolf Point was led by Imani Big Horn who had 12 kills and three blocks. Ashtyn Hentges had 20 digs. Kelsie Neubauer had all 30 of Wolf Point's assists and Mandi Martin had three aces.
The M-ettes will travel to Harlem on Thursday to take on the Lady Cats, with games starting at 3:30 p.m.
