One Nation, Under God
No, I’m not voting for Hillary. I’m not voting for Trump either and I met the guy once.
Several years ago, I had an opportunity to work at the U.S. Open Tennis Championship in Queens, N.Y.
About 60 missionary students and I were food runners for Levy restaurants at the event. Though tennis isn’t my first choice for a sporting event, I have to admit the experience was pretty cool. It didn’t hurt that I met the future love of my life, Susan Bibbs at the event.
One of the best parts of working those long 12+ hour days at the U.S. Open was that you never knew which famous person you would meet next. I saw Charlize Theron from a distance. I saw Chris Bosh walking to his suite and man was he tall! There saw several others at the event but the one that is the most relevant today is Donald Trump.
Throughout the week we ran food to Trump’s suite. At his suite was one of his assistants Sal, who had the vibe of an old school New York gangster. He would see me and others walking the six foot tall food boxes around and would offer us water. Of course not wanting to be rude, I accepted the water.
I remember one of the stranger things was getting Trump’s order and it consisted of a couple of orders of hot dogs. This was an event where there were several types of steaks and an almost endless menu and he ordered hotdogs? Then I saw the prices for some of those entrées. A platter of hot dogs was $60 with six hot dogs in each platter. He also had brownies. My wife Susan and I both had one of his leftover brownies later that day.
Walking the dinner platters in Trump’s room was cool but also a little weird because I felt like a peasant bringing food to rich people. I was less than 10 feet away from Trump who was surrounded by friends and family.
I looked over to Trump, waved. He looked back over and gave me a thumb up. The weirdest thing about our short interaction was his hair. It was green!
Another weird thing was hearing the rumors around the event about Trump. Word was that he was sneaking Heinekens into the event because the beer prices were ridiculous. That may be the only thing that he and I agree on because the prices were ridiculous, $40 for a six pack, if I remember correctly.
The Heineken rumor was confirmed by another. But my question is why wasn’t he drinking a domestic (American Made) brew?
