One Nation, Under God
A celebration of the community of Phillips County will be held this Sunday in Malta, with food, live music and stories from local businesses and families who have lived and worked here for over 100 years.
Perris Jacobs came up with the idea of hosting the Phillips County Proud event and hopes the event on Sunday is one of many to come in the future.
“This is the first time we are doing the event, but we are hoping to make it annual an event,” said Jacobs, part of a six-person committee getting the celebration lined out. “I’m really excited about it and we have had a really good response for people getting us stories about their business and farms, so we will have quite a few 100-year people to celebrate.”
The stories are being tabulated by Jenny Oxarart and worked into a PowerPoint presentation for those in attendance on the night to enjoy. Jacobs said the response from the community of Phillips County has been great leading up to the event and she is expecting a large turnout on the night.
“I have a really great committee that has helped me plan this event and we have got really great support from the community,” said Jacobs. “We will be thanking a lot of donors and sponsors after this is all over.”
Before turning the pictures and stories over to Oxarart, Jacobs had a chance to see the items submitted by families and businesses and she feels like people will truly enjoy the presentation.
“There is a great variety,” she added. “The Phillips County News is one of them and then we have some families and I think people were excited to share their family histories. It’s really kind of neat.”
The event is being held on Saturday, September 17 at the Milk River Pavilion and the doors open at 5:30 p.m. There will be Kid’s Games hosted by Phillips County 4-H, Phillips County’s own Trial by Fire will be providing the live music and there will be free barbeque hotdogs and hamburgers and the Lucky Bullet will be hosting a beer garden for the purchase of adult beverages.
There is no charge to attend the event or for the food and games, but goodwill donations will be accepted and appreciated and any monies raised from the event will help pay for this year’s function and anything left over will go toward, hopefully, the Second Annual Phillips County Proud event next year. Ranchers Stewardship Alliance, a nonprofit organization whose mission includes the encouragement of livestock ranching and other traditional livelihoods, which will sustain our native grasslands and rural communities for generations to come, is hosting this year’s event. RSA is covering any costs of the event not paid for through the goodwill donations.
“For me, the goal is to celebrate our heritage,” Jacobs said. “To celebrate that we have had families and businesses here for well over 100 years that are well established. That there are generations (of family) that have continued to come back to run them or some form of them. It’s a really great thing and Phillips County is not dying, contrary to popular belief. We are really excited to host the event and we hope that everybody comes out to join us.”
