One Nation, Under God
For the past 39 years, the folks down at Art's Furniture and Carpet have made it their duty to keep people comfortable, literally.
On Thursday, September 15, Art’s will host their Business After Hours event in conjunction with the Malta Chamber of Commerce and the fireplace will be roaring, the cookies fresh and, of course, comfort will be key.
“We just want to thank our area customers for the last 39 years,” Julie Snellman, Art and Mary’s daughter, said. “We will have sales throughout the store, people can come and see what’s new, there will be drawings and giveaways, but mostly, come in and sit for awhile . . . we have plenty of chairs for people to relax in."
Art and Mary Lundstrom purchased what was then known as McCoy’s Furniture in 1977 and had thought they would turn the store away from furniture and instead sell sporting goods. It didn’t take long for the Lundstroms to decide that the costs associated with stocking the shelves of a sporting goods store weren’t something they felt like taking on and decided to stick with furniture (and, for a spell, was known as Art’s Furniture and Music and sold musical instruments, records and such…but that story is for another day.) The store then started selling flooring in 1979 and the rest, as they say, is history.
“It is fun to know how many people have shopped here for years and to be able to go into their homes and help them decorate and remodel and even help with building their homes,” said Snellman.
Snellman said that she has grown up in the store – and has worked there part-time for the last four years – and added that the Thursday event is a way to share old times with their valuable customers and swap stories.
“This will be a casual get-together,” she said. “The fireplace will be on, we have plenty of recliners so people should come in, put their feet up and visit with us and let us thank them ."
